The Pelican

It can be hard to know where to begin when looking for delicious places for dinner. Restaurant journalists have their personal favourites that they keep going back to. Many restaurants are making waves in notoriety while others just sit there quietly unassuming. TGQ visited The Pelican in All Saints Road W11 for a late afternoon Sunday lunch, which appears to be, quite ingeniously doing both.

Pushing boundaries on sustainability the menu is beautifully curated using Farm to Table produce.  If that was not enough the flavours punctuated into every dish leave a comforting satisfaction hard to beat.

Farm to Table

The menu changes frequently, following seasonal fare, with no-frills dishes such as Barnsley Chops, Bone-in Sirloin and a signature dish, The Lobster and Monkfish Pie.  The hospitality conjured the imagination and our taste buds.  After starters of fresh oysters and bubbles, we moved on to Mackerel with Green Tomatoes and Bone Marrow with Parsley, finishing with a Pie and Lamb. Their requisite Chips with roasted garlic sauce were so good it can’t be explained; helped it all along.  Not having sampled the glorious puddings that will have to be on a (not too long to wait for) return to be justified, if only to try the pairing menu. There’s an impressive wine list with a decent selection of cocktails making that two reasons to book ahead for a return visit.

The Gilded Queen

The underlying emphasis is on carefully selecting produce from suppliers that encourage biodiversity and regenerative farming. Coupled with the commitment to supporting the great British pubs, the relationship that brings each community is evident in the enjoyment of everyone dining.

But of course, dining is not just about the food.  The Pelican is a testament to how beautiful interiors serve as a backdrop for sensational food. The mood is a minimalist approach to a Georgian coaching inn; log fire, crammed tables of pared back woods blending perfectly with leather chairs, plastered walls, mirrors and flagstones.

The Gilded Queen

The Pelican leans towards an unstuffy atmosphere that is familiar with a relaxed afternoon by the fire. Dining a deux or with a large table of friends, the hum of conversations within the restaurant, the beautifully lit tables, the carefully curated dishes served ensure why The Pelican defies London’s competitive restaurant scene.
