I have always been a swimmer. Forever drawn to water. Personally, swimming provides a natural escape from the stresses of daily life, helping to reduce anxiety and encourage relaxation. Swimming in the sea has always been a treat whenever the opportunity arises. Waking up within walking distance in the summer months is too tempting. With the day breaking, the beauty of the beach’s early morning is breathtaking. Watching the light dance on the water. I wasn’t alone. It didn’t take long to discover other like-minded girls taking an early morning dip.
There’s the camaraderie, connecting with others who want to share experiences and create lasting friendships. Swimming in groups also, very importantly, ensures safety, especially for those new to wild swimming and provides a network with similar interests. Examples of wild swimming groups around the country can provide relevant information about safety measures, equipment and guidelines for beginners.

Wild swimming engages the mind by requiring focus, adaptability, and decision-making skills in navigating natural water environments. The combination of physical exercise, exposure to nature, and the meditative qualities of swimming contribute to a cognitive boost of function and mental clarity.
Exposure to cold water during wild swimming can promote blood circulation and improve the immune system. It’s a great cardiovascular workout, helping to strengthen the heart and improve overall fitness. The resistance water offers strengthens muscles and joints without putting excessive strain on them. Your weight management by regular swimming aids the effectiveness of burning calories and promoting a healthy metabolism. Your body feels energised, challenged, and enhanced through endurance and stamina.

The “Wim Hof” method has been branded recently. Inspired by the “Iceman” Wim Hof, this method combines cold water immersion, breathing techniques and mental focus. Practising this method alongside wild swimming can provide additional benefits, including increased energy levels and stress reduction. Swimming is my happy place. The release of endorphins during physical exercise, combined with the soothing properties of water and refreshing and stimulating senses, uplifts my mood and contributes to my overall mental well-being.
